10 Backyard Ideas to Improve Your Outdoor Space

How to upgrade your backyard

Want to improve your outdoor space without breaking the bank? Here are 10 fantastic backyard ideas to transform your patio and garden.

Outdoor Decor Shopping

With the weather finally warm, it’s time to get the patio in order without spending a lot of money. Walmart is a go-to place every year for outdoor decor. The goal is to acquire everything from furniture to plants, while also sharing some of the best outdoor hacks to make putting together an outdoor space a little bit easier.

Rugs and Protective Hacks

The first item to acquire is a rug. The rugs by Better Homes and Gardens are a great choice, particularly a black and white stripe one. One of the best hacks to protect an outdoor rug and make it last longer is to add Flex Seal. It’s a clear protective coating to keep the colors in the rug vibrant longer.

Furniture Selection with Trend Getter

If you’re having trouble finding furniture for your patio, consider Trend Getter. A set of Furniture was found online that was appealing, but its source was unknown. Trend Getter was used to find similar Furniture pieces on Walmart.com. It’s an easy way to find products at a more affordable price. A conversation area can be created with chairs by adding them to a rug. The chairs are adorable, and the seats are very comfortable.

Planters and Plants

The Planters at Walmart this year are exceptional. These black Rattan Planters are great for a deck. Ferns are a favorite plant to get every year, as they’re very large and super affordable. Place a plant on either side of a furniture grouping. If you plan on using more than one planter on each side of your grouping, a black Rattan planter is great because it has legs, so it’s going to put that plant up a little bit higher and give variation in height. Not only are ferns inexpensive, they are great in Planters. One does not have to hang them up; just cut off the hanging piece, and they look so full in these planters.

Affordable Coffee Table

To put together a coffee table really affordably, use these plant stands. Find some trays to put on top. Two trays that have a similar color will work perfectly. Spray paint the gold base black to match the other base using two coats of a matte black spray paint. Add E6000 to the top of the tray, as well as some hot glue. Then, put the tray on top. Repeat these steps for both trays and let it sit overnight.

Pool Noodle Planter Hack

A favorite planter is a white one, and they make hanging plans look full in potted plants. An inexpensive hack to fill them up is to take a pool noodle and wrap it around the bottom of your planter. This is going to fill up the space, and to take it a step farther, a hanging plant can be used to put in this planter. Simply cut off the top part of the hanging planter and place it into the pot. It will look like it was originally a hanging planter. Consider the look of this large planner; they are easy to plant.

Plant Weight Hack

If you live in a windy climate and need to weigh down your plants, a hack is to put sand in the bottom of your Planters before adding in the plant. That’s going to provide the weight needed so your plants don’t topple over.

Pillow Hacks

Black throw pillows and white ones with tassels are great choices. If you don’t like chasing your pillows across the yard when they fly off your chairs, try this hack. You’re gonna need two things: Ziploc baggies and sand. Take your Ziploc baggies and put some sand inside, then close up your baggies. With your throw pillows that you put on your chairs, just unzip the back, put the baggie inside; that’s going to give additional weight to your pillows so they hopefully will stay in place.

Coffee Table Styling

To style the coffee table, get a smaller planter to put on the coffee table. A colorful plant can be picked up to put in the planter. Remove the drainage stopper from the planter, add in the plant, and put it on the coffee table. If you have a rattan tray for the coffee table, consider using some coasters. A great hack for outdoor space coasters is to use tiles. You may have some of these laying around your house, or you can pick them up at the thrift store. They’re really inexpensive and they’re a great way to have a coaster outside. Melamine plates and a set of plastic stemware are great for outdoor space use.

Plant Pruning Tip

A tip to help prevent cross-contamination between your plants is to take a container of alcohol outside with you whenever you’re pruning your plants. When switching to a new plant, just dip your pruning shears into that container before moving on to the next Plant. The alcohol will just help to sterilize your shears.

Cleaning Outdoor Cushions

It’s that time of year where old outdoor cushions and pillows are pulled out, and dirt and mildew are found on them. Instead of replacing them, try using a product called 30 second cleaner. Spray the cleaner across the whole entire pillow, then let it sit for about 30 minutes. You’ll see how much the stains disappear over that 30 minutes. If you have older pillows, try this out.
